Abstract

The present invention relates to improvements in swing sledge mills for breaking up lumps of material and directed towards improving the performance of such mills when used for breaking up wet material. The mill comprises a cylindrical chamber 1 arranged with its axis horizontal and housing a plurality of pivotally mounted breaking members 8 which are rotated by a horizontal axis shaft 5. Material to be broken is fed to the mill through tangential inlet 2 into the path of a member 8 and is initially subject to impact against a breaker plate 12, which is horizontally reciprocated past scrapers 14 to remove any build up of material on the plate which would otherwise eventually stop operation of the mill. <IMAGE>
