Abstract
In a fractionating process using a distillation column the bottoms residue (e.g. of petroleum) is stripped with gas, part of which has been supplied from an upper part of the column by conduit means located internally or externally of the column. A vacuum column 10 is provided (internally in Fig. 2) with a steam ejector 28, 29 which recycles some of the gaseous mixture present at the top of column. The mixture is drawn through filter 30, compressed in the ejector and conducted by conduit 119 to the stripping zone 11, preferably above the lowest of the trays 111 therein. Small quantities of fresh steam may be admitted through conduit 22. <IMAGE>
