Abstract

816,522. Distilling and deodorising liquid mixtures by treatment with gases ; purifying fats. RAFFAETA, R. Dec. 17, 1956, No. 38449/56. Classes 32 and 91. In the treatment of liquid mixtures with gases or vapours to separate at least one component of the mixture, the liquid mixture is caused by a recycling process to fall repeatedly under the effect of gravity and in finely divided form through enclosures bounded by vertical perforated walls through which a stripping gas flows transversely to the falling liquid to entrain the more volatile components. The process is particularly applicable to the deodorization of edible oils, e.g. with steam, and to the fractional distillation of fatty acids. An edible oil to be deodorized is introduced at connection 4 and is dispersed in enclosures 1, 2, 3 by sprays 12. The gas enters distributing chamber 9 through inlet 7 and passes successively through the perforated walls of enclosures 3, 2, 1 to outlet chamber 10, condenser 15 and outlet 11. The condensed oil from the condenser is returned to the system by line 16. The liquid from the bottoms of enclosures 1, 2 is returned to the sprays by pumps 5, 6 and cooler 13 or heater 14. The heavy fractions of the mixture are removed at outlet 19 and the light fractions are condensed from the vapours leaving outlet 11. Part of the liquid may be evaporated and the vapours introduced into an intermediate enclosure 18 by connection 17. The liquid may be introduced at connection 20 instead of connection 4, in which case the liquid supply to enclosure 1 consists entirely of condensate from condenser 15. Modifications are described wherein the compartments are arranged coaxially around a central cylindrical chamber to which vacuum is applied through a reflux condenser. In one example, such a modification is used to separate free fatty acids from triglycerides, and also to hydrolyse unstable impurities which give rise to rancidity, by using superheated steam under a vacuum of 2 or 3 mm.
