Abstract

Aluminum-containing castings having internal passages and apertures are formed by using molded, sintered, substantially inorganic shaped cores comprising at least 30% by weight calcium carbonate. Aluminum or aluminum alloy castings are formed by pouring molten metal into a mold having a calcium carbonate core disposed therein. The core is removed from the casting by contacting the casting with an aqueous solution of an inorganic acid, preferably nitric acid. Preferably the core comprises before moulding:- 65% CaCO3 4% montmorillonite clay 18.6% zircon 2% frit 1% stearic acid 9.4% paraffin wax. d
