Abstract
The sulfur content of coal is reduced by: (1) contacting coal particles with (a) a silicate selected from the group consisting of alkali metal silicates, alkaline earth metal silicates, and mixtures thereof and optionally (b) a promoter material capable of oxidising or reducing equilibrium sulfur reaction products formed by the contacting to non- equilibrium reaction products, in an aqueous medium to reduce the sulfur content of the coal; and (2) recovering coal particles of reduced sulfur content. The promoter material may be air oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, alkali metal sulfites, alkaline earth metal sulfites, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, potassium thiosulphate, sodium thiosulphate and alkali metal polythionites o
