Abstract

851,054. Combustible gas. STEINMULLER G.m.b.H., L & C. Jan. 22, 1957, No. 2253/57. Class 55 (2). In a process for reducing the hydrogen content while increasing the net calorific value of hydrogen-containing coal gas formed by degasifying coal, more particularly coal dust in suspension, the gas is brought into contact with a solid oxidising agent comprising a reducible metal oxide, preferably Fe 2 O 3' or CuO, at a temperature which is sufficient for the reduction of this oxide by hydrogen, the reduced oxide then being oxidised by ignition in the presence of oxygen and used again to reduce the hydrogen content of coal gas. Two chambers on fluidised beds may be used in a closed cycle process or alternate oxidation and reduction processes in one chamber alternate with oxidation and reduction processes in the other. Heat produced during oxidation is used in the reduction process.
