Abstract
A fluid-filled metal-clad switchgear has an automatically-operating earthing switch for short- circuiting an internal arc in the earthed metal enclosure 11. The earthing switch comprises a piston 18 movable in a cylinder 17 mounted on the enclosure wall, with the piston rod 19 projecting through a close fitting hole 16a in the wall into the interior space 12, filled with insulating medium. A pipe 24 connects space 12 to the cylinder 17 on the outer side of the piston, so that on occurrence of an internal arc in the vessel 11 the rapid pressure rise creates a pressure differential across the piston to drive it and the piston rod 19 inwardly and cause the piston rod to engage the high-voltage conductor 10 and short-circuit it to the earthed vessel 11 via contacts 29 and 21. The switch is normally held open either by a restraining spring 20 or by breakable pegs fitted into the internal wall of the cylinder 17. A visual indicator 25, 26, 27 is provided. <IMAGE>
