Abstract
Apparatus for measuring the angular deviation from the vertical of the end of the drill string includes a housing adapted for insertion in the drill string, a pendulum 24 pivotally mounted in the housing and capable of swinging through large angles, and a substantially perfectly balanced link 25 pivoted at the same point as the pendulum and normally coaxially aligned with the end of the drill string, Figure 5, by spring-engagement of its end with a seat 110. A pawl 70 on the link 25 can be brought into engagement with notches 97 on the pendulum to couple the pendulum and link together, Figure 6, the pendulum being displaced by an angle B as the notch is brought into alignment with the pawl; the link is then released from the seat 110, the pendulum swings back through angle B to a vertical position taking the link with it, the angle being measured by engagement of a hook 76 on the link with a stepped ring 130. <IMAGE>
