Abstract

A compressor and/or expander has a nutating vaned rotor in which the vanes (41 to 46) rotate about an axis (VA) which is canted with respect to the shaft axis (SA). The housing, Fig. 1 (not shown), has a disc-shaped main cavity having adjacent hub recesses which are concentrically spherical. The cavity is in the form of a doubly truncated sphere canted with respect to the shaft axis. The rotor has both a central spherical portion (63), which mates with the recesses, and an integral ring (73) extending to the peripheral wall of the cavity to divide the cavity into two "sides" of circular wedge shape. The vanes (41 to 46) occupy radially extending slots in the rotor and serve to separate each side into successive chambers which vary cyclically in volume as the shaft rotates without causing the vanes to reciprocate either radially or axially. <IMAGE>
