Abstract

Fuel is injected through a nozzle into a secondary chamber 2 in communication with the main combustion space 5, through a transfer passage 7 which opens tangentially into the said chamber 2. The secondary chamber 2 has a central baffle element 9 which is impinged upon by a secondary fuel jet 12; a primary jet 11 striking the chamber wall 15. The secondary jet 12 is so controlled that it forms a substantial part, or predominant part, of the total fuel injected at starting and in the lower load and/or speed range. All the fuel may be injected as the secondary jet at starting. <IMAGE>
