Abstract

April 20, 1922 Padlocks.-A combination padlock has a projection at the pivoted end of the shackle which engages the periphery of a pair of notched discs which block the shackle against openings until the discs are set tol allow the projection to enter notches in the discs. The discs may be flanged, the flanges being inturned to engage recesses on each side of the nose end of the shackle and notched to permit release of the shackle. The discs c, c' are coaxial and extend through the casing, the disc c having a boss c<2> which forms a bearing from the disc c<2>. Each disc has a notch c<5> which allows the projection b<1> on the shackle to enter when set for opening by means of pointers c', c<4> moving over a dial on the casing. Surfaces b<3>, b<4> on the pivoted end of the shackle act as stops by abutting on the periphery of the discs. The discs may have false notches. The discs may have notched flanges c, Fig. 4, engaging the nose of the shackle B. The pointers may be mounted on separate discs for changing the combination. The disc c' then has recesses engaged by projections h on a disc g carrying the pointer n and the disc c has a disc carrying the other pointer n and overlapping the disc g, and secured by a disc k carrying an integral thumbscrew k' screwing on to a stem m on the boss c<2>. The screw k<1> can only be slackened to permit changing the combination by altering the relative positions of the locking discs and pointer discs when the disc c is held against turning by the projection b<1>, i.e. when the shackle is unlocked. A key E having a flange e with notches e<3>, e<4> for engaging over the pointers c<3>, c<4>, may be used for unlocking, the key turning the discs to the correct position when the end e<2> engages the stop b<2> on the shackle.
