Abstract
A combination lock includes an over-centre mechanism for moving the fence 6 of the lock between two alternative positions with a snap action, the over-centre mechanism comprising a lever arm 16 secured to the fence 6 and turning about a pivot 17 on the bolt assembly 14 and a stressed spring 18 connected at one end 19 to the lever arm and at the other end 20 to a member 24 capable of movement between two positions in relation to the bolt assembly. In one of the two positions the line of action of the spring 18 passes to one side of the pivot 17 of the lever arm and in the other position it passes to the other side of the pivot 17, so that when the member 24 moves from one position to the other the lever arm 16 is biased to move the fence 6 from one alternative position to the other. The member 24 is controlled by, rotation of the dial D of the lock in such a way that the fence 6 remains in the first of its two positions for the majority of a revolution of the dial D, being moved to the second position, in which it is capable of responding to the gates 4 in the combination wheels 3, only for the remaining small fraction of a revolution. <IMAGE>
