Abstract

This invention relates to a powered roller conveyor comprising a plurality of rollers 12 driven by friction drive from a common drive shaft wherein at an accumulation station an arresting device is provided to engage and arrest an article, a roller unit at the accumulation station being driven from the common drive shaft, preferably through a secondary drive shaft 16, there being means 18 to disconnect the drive to the roller unit at the accumulation station when the accumulation station has a predetermined number of stationary articles thereat. Elastomeric belts 14 are driven by the shaft 16 by way of pulleys 15 rotatably mounted on the shaft and transmit drive to the rollers 12. The means 18 operates to raise the shaft 16, thus reducing tension in the belts 14 and allowing the pulleys 15 to slip on the shaft 16. <IMAGE>
