Abstract

To calm a body of water a succession of booms are placed to at least partially surrounding said body and a material, eg ice particles, solid carbon dioxide or liquid nitrogen at a cryothermal temperature at or below the freezing point of is distributed on the surface. Preferably the booms carry blocks of solid carbon dioxide or contain internal passages for the flow of fluid at a cryothermal temperature. An oil spill may be cleaned up and recovered from the said surface by using additional booms presenting a surface at said cryothermal temperature to said oil spill. <IMAGE>
