Abstract

An acrylonitrile polymer bicomponent composite fiber having cotton-like feel and touch consists of two different acrylonitrile polymer filamentary constituents in a side-by- side type or core-in-sheath type configuration. The filament has an average denier of 0.5 to 1.5 and 40 to 150 crimps/25 mm. The composite fiber is produced by drawing in two separate stages an undrawn composite filament and, then, by relaxing the drawn composite filament at an elevated temperature. The first draw ratio corresponds to 0.2 to 0.5 times the ultimate draw ratio of the undrawn composite filament, and the product of the first and second draw ratios is 10 or more.
