Abstract

In a pulse-width modulated thyristor push-pull inverter having a turn-off inductance L, a turn-off capacitance C across a centre-tapped main transformer TR, and diodes D1, D2, reversely connected across the thyristors Th1, Th2, each thyristor is turned on for several chopping frequency pulses during each half cycle of the a.c. output of the inverter. The other thyristor is triggered to turn off the first. Roles are exchanged each half-cycle. During the off portions of the pulses the primary current is maintained by the transformer via the diode which by-passes the other thyristor and incidentally charging the battery forming the d.c. source for the inverter. The widths of the conductive pulses are determined by electronic control means (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 16, 18) to regulate the output and the chopping frequency is synchronized with the AC output frequency and from 5 to 10 times this AC frequency for normal mains replacement applications. <IMAGE>
