Hydrocarbons, distilling.-Apparatus for dehydrating and distilling tar comprises a dehydrator so arranged that it may be used either for dehydration only or for preheating the tar flowing to a still, the apparatus being heated either by the heavy vapours of subsequent distillation of the tar or by steam. Crude tar is fed by a pipe 1 to a condenser 2, where it is preheated before entering the dehydrator 3 bv the oil and water vapours leaving the dehydrator bv a pipe 5. The tar gravitates through vertical tubes 6 and over horizontal coils 7, Fig. 2, and these tubes and coils may be heated either bv oil vapours leaving the still 8 by a pipe 10 or bv steam from a pipe 11, each coil and the casing surrounding each nest being connected by a separate branch union both to the pipe 10 and to the steam supply pipe 11 so that each coil and tube nest may be heated either by steam or oil vapours selectively and independently of the other nests and coils. An exhaust steam pipe 12 is provided and a pipe 13 for conveying the vapours to a condenser 14 discharging into a receiver 17 connected to a vacuum pump 17<a>, whereby the distilling operation is carried out in a vacuum. The tar passes by gravity through a pipe 15 to a collector 16 from which it is pumped to the still 8. The pitch from the still 8 is run into a receiver 18 and transferred to pitch bays 19 arranged in the manner described in Specification 200,460, [Class 55 (ii), Gas manufacture &c.].
