Abstract

534,560. Distilling tar. GREEN, H. E. J. March 12, 1940, No. 4617. [Class 32] In a process for the distillation of tar and like hydrocarbon materials by passing the tar through a tube still to a separating trap from which vapours are removed and condensed while the liquid collecting in the trap is in part re-circulated and admixed with the crude feed at a point before its entrance to the still. A plurality of units comprising each a still and separating trap are operated in cascade, the overflow from the separating trap of one unit constituting the feed to the succeeding still. Tar is fed by a pump 1 through line 3 and tubular still 2 to a trap 4 from which vapours are led off to a condenser 6. The liquid collecting in the trap is led in part through line 8 and syphon bend 9 to admix with the fresh feed at junction 10, while the remainder of the liquid is led through syphon 16 and line 15 to a second similar still in which the process is repeated, higher temperatures being used. The stills may be operated under vacuum and steam supplied through inlet 11.
