Abstract

In the manufacture of low pressure mercury lamps, e.g. fluorescent or mercury arc lamps, the desired amount of mercury is provided by a metering device, and this mercury particle is coated with a chemically stable powder, e.g. a metal oxide such as zirconium oxide or aluminium oxide, before being introduced into the lamp. The manufacture of the lamp in a turret machine includes the steps of fitting bulbs through each evacuating pipe to each evacuating head communicating to an evacuating device; weighing mercury by a mercury weighing device to take up each constant weight of mercury particle; coating the mercury particle with a chemically stable powder; and charging the coated mercury particle through an evacuating head into each bulb together with an inert gas as a seal gas. Drops of mercury metered from the Hg storage container 17 fall onto rotatable funnel-shaped body 28 whose inner slant surface 26 is covered with the chemically stable powder which is picked up by the mercury as it rolls to the feeding orifice 27. <IMAGE>
