Abstract

For joining two optical fibres, especially under field conditions, it is known to use a surface with a V- groove machined or otherwise produced in the surface, the two fibre ends being butted together in the groove. In the present arrangement, an alignment guide of the above type is made by placing two or more glass rods 1, 2 together with their axes parallel and their surfaces touching; and pulling them while they are heated. This produces a V-groove alignment guide the sides of which are curved. The use of glass rods means that the alignment guides are relatively cheap and are of a material compatible with that of the fibres. <IMAGE>
