Abstract

Casting cores are formed from a helical coil of wire, the coil 1 having an outer diameter corresponding to the desired bore of a passageway. To hold the coil in shape, a support wire 2 is provided, passing down the centre of the coil, of stiff material which easily takes a permanent set, such as mild steel or aluminium. After casting, the core is removed by gripping the wires, and pulling them out of the passageway. The surface finish of the passageway may be improved by investing the shaped coil with a smooth coating of suitable heat resisting material e.g. talc or plumbago. The ends of the core wires may be encased in sand prints, 10, 11, for improved accuracy of location in the mould. Divided passageways can be made by joining lengths of coil and stiffening wires. <IMAGE>
