Abstract
Apparatus for determining the energy of charged particles, particularly electrons, comprises an energy analyzer 2 and a particle optical system 4-7 mounted in front of the analyzer. The particle optical system includes a cylindrical condenser 5 which deflects the particles to be analyzed to such an extent during their passage from the place of origin 16 to the inlet opening of the analyzer 2 that there is no visual communication between the place of origin of the particles and the inlet opening of the analyzer. Cylindrical condenser 5 can have correction plates 6 adjacent its open sides. The apparatus of Fig. 1 is for gaseous samples: apparatus for solid samples is shown in Fig. 3. <IMAGE>
