Abstract
An electrolyte solution, gel or paste for use in an electrochromic display device based on a transition metal oxide contains between 10<-6> and 10<-1> mole/litre of a redox material dissociating to form hydrogen ions in concentrations of 10<-7> to 10<-1> mole/litre and undergoing the electrochemical reaction: Red <->><- Ox + nH<+> + n e<->, and 10<-7> to 10<-2> mole/litre of a material facilitating hydrogen in transport. The latter may be a tetraalkylammonium compound a sulphonic acid or sulphonated polymer a nitro- or chorophsol, tetrachloro-trifluoro - benzimidazole, carbonyl cyanide -m- trifluoro- phenylhydrazone, or a tetraphenylborate. The redox pair may be quirol - quinone, thiol - disulphide, hydropyridine - pyridium; ferrocene - ferricinium; bod - bod phosphate or similar pairs based on manganese or chromium. Redox polymers with sulphonic, phosphoric or carboxylic groups, e.g. sulphonated polyvinylhydroquinone may provide both a redox pair and hydrogen in transport. Electron carriers (redox pairs involving groups III, VI, or VII metals such as Ce and Cr, acid imids, or quiroid compounds, may be present at up to 10<-2> mole/litre.
