Abstract

1333945 Dipyridylium polymers POLAROID CORP 28 Aug 1970 [2 Sept 1969] 41590/70 Heading C3R [Also in Divisions E1 F4 G1 G2 H4 and B7] Dipyridylium polymers have units of formula where R 3 is alkylene containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms or xylylene and A is an anion. Examples of polymers are those obtained by reacting 4,4<SP>1</SP>- dipyridyl with 1,8-dibromo-octane and with 2,2<SP>1</SP> - dibromo - p - xylene. The polymers are redox compounds which are capable of reversibly forming a stable coloured free radical upon the addition of electrons. A variable light filter may be formed from a layer of the polymer (which is light-transmitting) and electrodes to pass a current through the layer. If a cast film of the polymer is stroked in one direction, current flow will cause the film to become polarizing and coloured.
