Abstract

Apparatus for distilling water from aqueous solution, particularly sea-water, has a vertical series of evaporation chambers (2) through which the solution being distilled flows downwardly. Each evaporation chamber is connected via a vapour aperture (4) to a condensor chamber (3), the condensor chambers (3) also being in vertical series for upward flow of cooling liquid. In order to provide a construction which is both simple and compact, the evaporation chambers (2) each have a narrow passage for the flow of solution which comprises one or more downward sections alternating with one or more upward sections and is connected to the vapour aperture (4). The condensor chambers (3) have vertical tubes (7) each passing through a plurality of chambers for the flow of cooling fluid. These vertical tubes (7) contain particulate material fluidized by the cooling fluid during operation. <IMAGE>
