Abstract

In a electrochemical display device a layer (12) of ceramic fibrous material impregnated with electrolyte is disposed between a front plate (11), provided with an electochromic layer, and a base counterelectrode plate (16). The layer (12) is held in place by a spacer (13) provided with nozzles (14 and 15) for the supply of electrolyte to the layer (12). The ceramic fibrous material preferably has a refractive index greater than 2, and is made of for example, zirconium oxide. The ceramic fibrous material has a high resistance to the electrolyte. Also, it has a high resistance to the heat treatment used in the manufacture of the device. <IMAGE>
