Abstract
In the manufacture of a thin-film type magnetic read/write head combined with a supporting slider, the elements forming the head are deposited on a substrate of thickness equal to the required slider length. In batch fabrication the substrate wafer is subjected to a series of thin film deposition, etching and plating operations to form a plurality of thin film magnetic heads thereon. Thereafter, the substrate wafer is diced around each thin film magnetic transducer head with subsequent finishing and polishing to requisite shape. Each head may have a magnetoresistive read stripe and a bias layer between a magnetic shield and a first pole piece and a write conductor between the first pole piece and a trailing edge pole piece. The shield and both poles are each formed by layers of insulation alternating with magnetic layers, the layer thicknesses of the trailing pole being progressively reduced to shape the write field. At least the flying surface of each slider/head assembly may be coated with passivation material.
