Abstract

A terrestrial refractometer for providing a measure of refractive index of the atmosphere at or near the surface of the earth comprises a gas- tight enclosure 16 containing a fixed mass of dry gas which at least approximates to an ideal gas, at least a part of the enclosure being movable in response to changes in the volume of the gas in accordance with changes in ambient temperature and pressure; sensing means 24 responsive to the position of said movable part; and means 34 for providing a signal related to the distance of the movable part from a feed point outside the enclosure and positioned so that an increase in the volume of the gas causes a decrease in said distance. The sensing means may be either a pivoted lever system or an electrical capacitor providing a digital output. <IMAGE>
