Abstract

This invention is concerned with the problem that the air at head-height in a room may become substantially depleted of oxygen by the main burner of a gas appliance, upon malfunction of the main burner or of a flue connected to it, before a safety pilot burner sensitive to combustion products is sufficiently affected to switch off the gas supply to the main burner of the appliance. One proposed solution is to connect the air inlet 3 of the pilot burner 1 to one end of a tube 8 the other end of which is located at a higher point in the room. A second proposed solution is to locate that other end 12 of the tube 8 at a position in or adjacent to the gas appliance where the air rapidly becomes polluted upon malfunction of the main burner 19 or flue, such as above the radiant element 21 of a gas fire. <IMAGE>
