Abstract

An appliance fired by combustible fuel comprises a main fuel burner 10 having an operatively associated pilot burner 14. A flame and/or temperature detection device 16 is operatively associated with the pilot burner of the appliance and is connected to an indicator device 17, 19 adapted to be located at a position on the appliance readily viewable to a user and/ or at a location remote from the appliance also readily viewable by a user. As a result the operational condition of the pilot burner can easily and readily be seen. <IMAGE>

Description

A PILOT FLAME INDICATOR This invention relates to appliances fired by combustible fuel and comprising a main fuel burner having an operatively associated pilot burner (hereinafter referred to as wan appliance of the type aforesaid").
Examples of such appliances of the type aforesaid are gas or oil-fired boilers, water heaters or fires.
With some appliances of the type aforesaid it is difficult, if not impossible, to see if the pilot burner is ignited, which is unsatisfactory insofar as the user is concerned, due to restricted viewing access which can be caused, inter alia, by the location of the pilot burner or both the main and -pilot burners, by the structural design of the appliance, by the location of the appliance upon installation of same, or by a combination of these factors.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an appliance of the type aforesaid in which the aforesaid drawback is obviated or mitigated.
According to the present invention there is ptovided in or for an appliance of the type aforesaid a flame and/or temperature detection device adapted to be operatively associated with the pilot burner of the appliance and connected to an indicator device adapted to be located at a position on the appliance readily viewable to a user and/or at a location remote from the appliance also readily viewable by a user. Preferably the detection device is a thermocouple which, as is customary, linked to a main fuel supply valve of the appliance. The detection device may equally well be, if a thermocouple is not provided or if it is not desired to use the thermocouple to actuate the indicator device, any other convenient form of sensor or detector including, inter alia, infra-red, piezo-electric, light, magnetic or optical, or a rectification through flame device, or a bimetallic switch arrangement or combinations thereof.
The indicator device may, inter alia, be a meter-type indicating instrument, for example a galvanometer, an indicator lamp, a liquid crystal or an L.E.D. or combinations thereof.
The conception of the present invention may also be achieved by the direct use of fibre optical technology.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing which illustrates alternative means for indicating pilot burner operation.
In the drawing a main burner, say, of a gas boiler is indicated at 10, the burner 10 being connected by a gas supply line 11 to a main gas valve 12 which is also connected to an inlet- pipe 13 for gas mains supply (not shown).
A pilot gas burner 14 is disposed ' adjacent to the main gas burner 10 for igniting the latter and is, in turn, connected to the gas valve 12 by a supply line 15.
A thermocouple 16 is disposed adjacent the pilot burner 14, usually in the flame emitted by the latter, and is operatively connected to the gas valve 12.
The thermocouple 16 is, constituted by dissimilar metals which, when heated, generate an electromotive force (e.m.f.). The latter is of the order of ten (10) to twenty (20) millivolts for example, and is used to hold open a fail safe electromagnetic unit (not shown) in the main fuel line 11 to the main burner 10.
According to the present invention, this e.m.f.
is used directly to drive a galvanometer type instrument 17 and the e.m.f. can be amplified as indicated at 18 to illuminate an L.E.D. 19 or a lamp bulb or a liquid crystal.
The indicator device 17 or 19 is disposed at a readily viewable location on the gas boiler or at a readily viewable location remote from the gas boiler or both.
20 indicates an alternative flame/temperature detection devices as hereinbefore specified.
Another alternative is an optical cable 21, whereof one end 22 "sees" the flame while the other end 23 is disposed at a readily viewable location.
The light transmitted through the optical cable 21 may be a mixture of both fibre optical and electric/ electronic transmission.
