Abstract

200,076. Cleveland Metal Products Co., (Assignees of Chadwick, L. S.). June 29, 1922, [Convention date]. Wick burners, annular; flame spreaders and deflectors.-An air-controlling member or flame spreader comprises a flange 30 having a downwardly extending portion 31 and a lip 32 immediately above the wick, and a body 20 formed by an annular enclosure 20 extending within the inner wick tube and so spaced relatively to the flange 30 that some of the air rising through the wick tube is diverted through the body on to the underside of the flange and outwardly between the flange and the wick. The flange and body are connected by a central tubular element 10 which also carries a downwardly, and outwardly extending top 36 spaced from the flange 30 by lugs 38 leaving a restricted air space in the same horizontal plane as openings 40 in the section 11 of the element 10. The flange 30 is carried by a shoulder 14 on the element 10. The body 20 may have a vertical outer wall spaced from the inner wick tube and with perforations 53, an inwardly extending top with perforations 54 and a lower sloping wall with perforations 52, and this lower wall may be attached to lower section 12 of the central element 10 by indentations at the lower edge thereof. An annular bead may be formed at the junction of the vertical and bottom walls of the body 20 resting on a span member 5 to which the spreader is latched by means of a pin 45 and locking elements 7 as described in Specification 213,293. Ascending air escapes through openings 40 and a restricted passage formed by the top and flange and issues as a continuous sheet, thus shielding the spreader from the flame. Other air currents escape through perforations 51, 50, and air rising through perforations 52 is deflected by the abutment 16 out from beneath the flange 30, imparting suitable shape to the flame. Condensation of vapours in the space between the wick and body is prevented by air issuing through perforations 53, 54. Specification 206,545 is also referred to.
