1 claim. (cl. 15s-91) The invention relates to oil burner apparatus of the vaporizng pot burner type.
The invention has for one of its objects to provide an improved burner which is so constructed that it produces a clean, uniform llame.
The invention has for another object to provide an improve'd burner which Vis so constructed that in the event that the oil orvoil vapor is ignited when the burner is flooded, puffing or kicking back of the burner is avoided.
The invention has for a further object to provide an improved burner which is so constructed that the flame is directed radially inwardly and toward the center of the burner at its top.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a portion of an oil burner apparatus having a burner embodying the invention;
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Figure l.
The oil burner apparatus, which is partly illustrated in the present instance, is a hot water heater in which the tank I has the inner cylindrical tube 2 which forms the combustion chamber. 3 is the burner which comprises a sheet metal shell having the sidewall 4 and integral bottom wall 5 and top wall 6 preferably in the nature of a casting resting upon the upper end of the side wall 4. 'I'he top wall has the downwardly eX- tending annular ange 1 sleeved within the side wall 4 and the upwardly extending annular flange 8 sleeved within the tube 2. The top wall is provided with the central opening 9 for placing the space inside the burner in communicationwith the combustion chamber formed by the tube. I and II are sheet metal bailles spaced from each other and the bottom and top walls of the burner, the baille I 0 having the central opening I2 and the baille II having the central opening I8 of appreciably greater diameter than the opening I2. The side wall 4 is provided with the annular series of primary air inlet openings I4 below the lower baille I0 and also with the annular series of primary air inlet openings I and I6 above the lower baille I Il, the openings I6 being below and adja- 1 cent to the upper baffle II. The side wall 4 is also provided with the annular series of secondary air inlet openings I1 above the upper bafe I I.
'I'he burner is also provided with the wall I8 which may be formed integral with or separately 2 from the upper baille II. As illustrated in the present instance, it is formed separately and xedly secured to the upper baflle as by being welded thereto. More in detail, the wall I8 has the cylindrical portion I9 which is sleeved within and welded to the cylindrical portion 20 of the upper baille. The wall I8 also has the tapering portion 2l which extends upwardly and radially inwardly of the burner from the cylindrical portion I9 and the cylindrical portion 22 which extends upwardly from the taperingl portion 2| and abuts the top wall 6. The wall I8 therefore'cooperates with the side wall l and the top wall 6 to form an air chamber communicating with the air outside the burner through the openings I1. The wall 22 is formed with the annular series of openings 23 which are preferably of the same size as the openings I1 and which are spaced a substantial distance below the upper edge of the cylindrical portion 22.
The sizes of the primary and secondary air inlet openings are such that the oil which enters the burner through the oil inlet 24 vaporizes and rises through the central openings I 2- and I 8 of the baiiles and ilnally mixes with the secondary air above the battles to produce a clean, eflicient llame, the secondary air being suflicient to assure complete'combustion. The llame starts immediately adjacent the cylindrical portion 22 and projects radially inwardly therefrom.
For the purpose of avoiding kicking or puillng back in the event that the oil in the burner is ignited when the burner is flooded, the top wall 6'is formed with the annular extension 25 radially inwardly beyond the cylindrical portion 22 and terminating in the depending annular iiange 26, the lower edge of which is preferably substantially in line with the uppermost edge portions oi' the openings 23. The annular extension and depending flange also serve to direct the flame radially inwardly from the cylindrical portion 22 to the opening 9 bounded by the depending iiange, after which the llame rises, the arrangement being such that direct contact of the llame with tle inner tube 2 is eliminated thereby avoiding direct burning of this tube.
What I claim as my invention is:
A pot type oil burner having a cylindrical side Wall, a circular bottom wall, an annular top wall, annular upper and lower baiiles spaced from each other and said bottom and top walls and having central openings therethrough, and an inner wall above said upper baille inside said side wall and cooperating with said side wall and top wall to REFERENCES form an annular air chamber, said inner wall havr ing openings between its upper and lower edges m'hf gvgtfeens 'are f record m the for the passage of air from said chamber into the space inwardly of said inner wall, said top wall 5 UNTED STATES PATENTS having a portion extending inwardly toward the Number axis of said burner beyond said inner wall and Y 2 116 278, Moggi? al Maanas terminating in a depending annular flange with 2165'212 Bauer 7' "Julyl' 1939 lits lower edge substantially in line with the upper- 2183812 Horns Dec 19 1939. most edge portions of the openings in said inner l0 2241470 Miner "May 13 1941 wall, said cylindricalfside wall having primary'air 2259743 Flche; Oct 21' 1941 inlet openings below and above said lower baille 2264'378 Hme De 2 1941 and secondary air inlet openings to said chamber. 21302237 Behren'gt'l.
