Abstract

The invention provides an improved steam trap of the kind having a spherical float 50 which is freely accommodated within a condensate-collecting sump 30 and cooperates directly with a valve seat 92 surrounding an outlet port 106 to control the discharge of condensate from the sump through this outlet port in dependence upon the level of condensate in the sump. In order to prevent violent impact of the float against the valve seat at the end each closing movement of the float and consequent risk of damage to the latter, without at the same time unduly reducing the rate of discharge of condensate when the float is unseated, there is provided, in the flowpath of the condensate on the downstream side of the outlet port, an orifice 112 having a flow area 0.5 to 1.0 times as large as that of the outlet port 106. <IMAGE>
