Abstract

Securing steering-wheels on shafts.-In steering-mechanism for motor and other road vehicles the steering-wheel is secured on a tubular pillar by drawing or swaging the extremity of the tube to fit a coned bore of the wheel boss, and holding the wheel in place by a nut engaging internal or external threads on the tube. As shown in Fig. 2, the pillar a is swaged to a taper a' and a reduced parallel part a<4>, which is externally threaded to receive a nut b. The tapered portion a<1> is lightly machined to fit the bore of the wheel c and is made rigid therewith by a separate key d or a pressed-up key as shown at a<3>, Fig. 3. The nut may have an aperture to accommodate engine control rods or tubes, which may take a bearing in the nut. In a modification, Fig. 3, the taper a' extends to the end of the tube, an internal nut b being fitted. In order to avoid constricting the bore of the tube a where three or more control elements pass therethrough, a cylindrical enlargement may be formed by swaging &c., as shown at a<4>, before the taper a<1> is produced.
