Abstract

197,911. Huth, W. H. Dec. 19, 1922. Variable - s p e e d toothed gearing; securing toothed wheels on shafts.-A knob or handle for adjusting variometers, variable condensers, &c. used in tuning wireless apparatus drives the adjustable element through speed-reducing means, the knob or handle or element being co-axially arranged and adapted to rotate always in the same direction. Means may be provided for changing to a direct drive for rapid course adjustment. A base plate 1 secured to a wall 2 has cast in it a stud 5 on which are freely revoluble a gear-wheel 6 and pinion 7 rigid with each other. The pinion 7 meshes with a wheel 8 secured on a spindle 11, Fig. 3, preferably by riveting over the shoulder 10 thereof. The driven shaft 18 is secured in the boss 9 of the spindle 11, on which is freely mounted a sleeve 12 having at one end a pinion 13 provided with clutch pins 14. The knob 16 is fast with the sleeve 12, outward movement thereof being limited by a stop 17 screwed in the spindle 11. As shown, the pinion 13 meshes with the gear 6 for low speed, but by sliding the knob inwards, the wheels 13, 5 come out of mesh and the pins 14 engage holes in the wheel 8 for direct drive, whereby rapid coarse adjustment of the shaft 18 can be effected. A pointer (not shown) is mounted on the shaft 18 to swing between the parts 1, 2.
