Abstract
197,527. Hamilton, L. M., Pollock, G. A., and Joly, C. L. May 3, 1922. Machine guns. - Relates to cooling means for machine guns, of the kind in which a fan 8 mounted on the muzzle end of the barrel 2 is rotated by the gases of discharge to produce a current of cooling air through a casing 1 enclosing the barrel. According to the invention, the fan is mounted over an aperture 11 in the wall of the barrel to the rear of the muzzle, the compressed gun gases issuing from this aperture being utilized to rotate the fan. In the form shown, the fan is mounted on ball-bearings 5 in a sleeve 4 inserted in the front of the casing 1 and the aperture 11 leads into an annular chamber 10 from which extend radial passages 9 in the blades of the fan. The passages 9 terminate in nozzles 7 for directing the gases on to the corrugated interior of the sleeve 4, the resulting reaction serving to rotate the fan. Cooling fins 12 preferably of copper may be welded to the 'barrel.
