Abstract

168,156. Towson, R. M. May 28, 1920. Machine guns; ordnance design; sound of discharge, modifying. - Relates to muzzle attachments for diminishing recoil and the sound of discharge, of the kind comprising a tubular element having a cylindrical member screwed into its forward end, adapted to deflect the gases following the projectile into lateral tubular outlets in the tubular element. According to the invention, (1) the deflecting surface is formed on an attachment secured to the inner end of the cylindrical member; (2) the rear end of the cylindrical member has lateral parts for the escape of the gases; and (3) the tubular outlets have extensions adjustable to vary the angle of discharge of the gases. In the form shown, the tubular element 3 has a bayonet-joint fitting for securing it to the gun, and has a cylindrical member 8 screwed into its forward end, carrying a collar 11 having curved surfaces 13 to deflect the gases through rearwardly curved lateral outlets 15. The member 8 may also have parts 10 leading into the outlets 15. Extension tubes 16 mav be fitted on the tubes 15, rotatable to adjust the angle of discharge of the gases.
