Abstract
196,614. Roucka, E. April 19, 1922, [Convention date]. Integrating.-A flow meter is provided with means for periodically varying the resistance to flow, the time taken for the differential pressure to read a predetermined value serving as a measure of the flow. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the area of the passage for flow is periodically varied by means of a member 3 carried by an arm 4: a synchronous motor 40 drives a cam 34 acting on a lever 18 carrying a catch 16 engaging an arm 10 on the shaft of the arm 4. The flow conduit is connected by pipes 50 to a differential pressure gauge, the diaphragm 54 of which is connected to a lever 64 normally held against a stop 65 by a spring 66. When the resistance to flow is increased in consequence of the reduction in area of the flow passage, the pressure acting to depress the diaphragm 54 is increased until, at a time depending on the flow, it becomes sufficient to depress the lever 64. A screw 70 carried by the lever then depresses a spring 74 so that a contact 72 engages with a spring 78 so that an electric current passes from a source 92 through 74, 78 and 76 to a line 46, and energizes electromagnets 44, 204 and 168. The magnet 44 through its armature causes the catch 16 to be disengaged from the arm 10, and a spring 12 moves the member 3 into the position of least resistance to flow. The magnet 204 removes a catch carried by its armature from engagement with a cam 192 driven by a synchronous motor 190, the cam then operating a counter through the arm 196, a friction grip or jaw 210 and a friction wheel 206. The magnet 168 moves a lever 164 to depress on to a travelling sheet 178, the recording point of a lever 160 which is oscillated by a cam 154 driven by a synchronous motor 150. in a modification, the resistance to flow is varied by a member 222, Fig. 2, acted on by a tension rod 226 connected to a cam-operated lever 234, and by a spring 230. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), comprises also a statement that the indications may be given by a variation or impulse of an auxiliary energy or medium such as light, heat, sound, electric waves &c. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
