Abstract

196,557. Thompson, W. P., (Torrington Co.). Jan. 21, 1922. Tapping; chucks.-In a machine for tapping. long articles such as nipples, the tap-holder is connected to a positively-fed spindle by means of a universal joint, and is loosely supported at a point between the tap and the spindle. The spindle 7, which is preferably double-ended, has a removable screwed sleeve 12 keyed thereon which coacts with a stationary sleeve 14 for feeding the tap 22, the latter being mounted in a holder 18 connected to the spindle by a universal joint 17 and loosely supported by a hardened bearing 23. The articles are fed to the taps one at a time and are held rigidly during threading. The blank feeding and holding devices are in duplicate, but only one pair of sleeves is provided for the spindle feed.
