Abstract
196,171. Birmingham Small Arms Co., Ltd., and Siddens, P. March 31, 1922. Hubs.-A metal blank 1, Fig. 1, is subjected to a series of press operations to produce a wheel hub, Fig. 8, having an integral brake-drum 2, in which brake-lining 7 is permanently secured and prevented from endwise and turning displacement. Fig 4 shows the partially shaped hubshell in which the flange 6 on the outer edge of the drum 5 is curved or inturned. The brakelining 7, Fig. 5, formed with one or more grooves 9, 9<a>, and serrations 8, is fitted in the drum 5 and the shell placed in the shouldered aperture of a bottom die 10, Fig. 6. A plug 12 is then inserted and pressure applied to the flange 6 by means of a die 13. In this step, the flattening of the flange 6 causes the metal to flow into the grooves and serrations of the ring 7. The small end of the shell is then flared to produce the other spoke-flange 15.
