Abstract
196,108. Borland, W. D., Nolan, T. J., and Nobel's Explosives Co., Ltd. Jan. 24, 1922. Explosives.-For hardening grains of fibrous nitrocellulose explosives, use is made of cyclohexanone, cycloheptanone, and their homologues, including ortho-, meta, and para-heptanone. In one example, 81 parts by weight of nitrocellulose, 10 parts of barium nitrate, 2 parts of starch, preferably in a boiled state, and 7 parts of mineral jelly are incorporated wet in an edge runner. The mixture is passed through a sieve of 10 meshes to the inch, and granulated in a steam-jacketed revolving pan. The correct sizes of grains are then sifted out and dried, and 100 parts of the dry grains are sprayed with 80 parts of a hardening composition containing 10 per cent of cyclohexanone and 90 per cent of alcohol. The grains are hardened by heat which drives off the solvent. The last traces of solvent are removed, and the explosive finally conditioned for use by air exposure. Specifications 166,277 and 166,502 are referred to.
