Abstract
A process to prepare a compound selected from the group consisting of N- (2,4-dihydroxybenzoyl) -4-aminosalicylic acid of the formula: **(See formula)** and the masked forms of N- (2,4-dihydroxybenzoyl) -4-aminosalicylic acid, which is represented by the formula: **(See formula)** wherein R1 is a masking hydroxyl group selected from the class consisting of a lower alkanoyl group, an aroyl group, a lower carboalkoxyl group, or a carbobenzoic group and R2 is a hydrogen atom, or a hydroxyl masking group selected from the class consisting of a lower alkanoyl group and an aroyl group, a carboalkosyl group or a carbobenzoic group and pharmaceutically acceptable non-toxic salts thereof; comprising the condensation of a compound of -resorcylic acid of formula: **(See formula)** wherein E and R1 are a masking hydroxyl or hydrogen group, and X is a hydroxyl or halogen, with a compound of p-aminosalicylic acid of formula: **(See formula)** wherein X is hydrogen or a physiologically acceptable cation and then, if necessary, converting any masking hydroxyl groups present in the resulting condensation product to hydrogen.
