Abstract
195,653. Satchwell, L. Dec. 16, 1921. Resistance grids.-In a resistance of the grid type, the bars of each component grid are splayed apart by and clamped upon an insulated member threaded between them at about the middle of their length. The insulated member employed consists of a strip of metal folded upon itself and arranged edgewise between strips of mica with flat supporting strips of sheet metal, as described in Specification 191,934; similar members may also be used to separate adjacent grids. Alternate bars of the grid may be bent out of their plane to receive the splaying separator, or as shown in Fig. 2, each bar may have an approximately central bend, adjacent bars in opposite directions, to receive the insulated member 13. When the component grids are made separately instead of from a continuous strip of metal, adjacent grid ends may be connected by bending them at right-angles and securing them by bolts 11, Figs. 1 and 2, or by welding etc.; alternatively, the separators may be extended beyond the length of the grids and the grid ends doubled around the extension 12, as at 16, and connected together or to control apparatus by bolts passing through the separator. To prevent longitudinal movement or straining of the bars of the grids, each bar is stamped with an approximately central recess of the same width as the separator which engages therein. The grids may be formed by cutting, stamping or bending a length of conductor into the required form. Preferably the grids are made by stamping a number of transverse slots in a sheet of metal, the slots extending to within a short distance of each edge. Adjacent bars are bent in opposite directions, the splaying insulators are introduced and the grids are mounted upon insulated bolts 10 and clamped by nuts 8 between end-plates 9. The slots are then extended to their respective edges, adjacent slots being extended in opposite directions, and the neighbouring junction ends of bars are given a twist to separate them further.
