Abstract

288,082. Campbell, H. E. Aug. 15, 1927. Couplings.-In an electric resistance of the type formed by slitting a metal plate from opposite edges and expanding it, rows of holes are formed near the edges of the plate between the slits through which insulated rods are passed to hold the plate in the expanded position. The plate 8 is slit and perforated as shown in Fig. 3 and expanded into the form shown in Fig. 1. Through holes 12 at the edge of the plate, pass rods 13, insulated from the plate by tubes 14 and secured at their ends to U-shaped bracket members 16 by nuts 17. The edges of the plate 8 may be prevented from cutting the tubes 14 by flanged thimbles 29, Fig. 6. In assembling the device, the plate 8 is placed between flanges secured to a plate at a distance apart equal to the width of the expanded plate, and therefore slightly less than that of the plate in its original state, and the rods 13 and tubes 14 threaded through the holes 12. The terminals are formed by flanged plates 20 bolted together over the ends of the plate 8 as shown, or over an intermediate portion. The plates 20 are formed with opposite slots 27, Fig. 6, through which pass rods 13, the edges 28 of the ends of the slots being turned up to embrace the rods. To the plates 20 are secured plates 23 with a V-shaped groove 24 to receive the conductor.
