Abstract

194,729. Passalacqua, A. March 13, 1922, [Convention date]. Coating; fluxes.-A pickling or fluxing agent for preparing the surface of metals, particularly aluminium and its alloys, for tin-plating, consists of a mixture of four compositions, the first comprising stearic acid, paraffin wax, resin, linseed oil, olive oil, or any other vegetable or animal oil, and lard, vegetaline, or similar fatty bodies, the second comprising stannous chloride, aluminium sulphate, aluminium chloride, sodium pyrophosphate, sal-ammoniac, caustic soda solution, stannous sulphate, nitric acid, zinc, chloride, and water, the third comprising nickel sulphate, ammonium chloride, citric acid, and distilled water, and the fourth comprising stannic chloride, sodium pyrophosphate, and distilled water. In preparing the pickling or fluxing agent a mixture of the last three compositions is added to the first composition and the whole is brought to boiling temperature. The agent is applied to one face only of the slightly heated metal, which is then subjected to a temperature of about 425‹ to 450‹ C., the agent spreading over the other face or faces of the metal. A stick of tin is rubbed over the metal and the tin spread by means of a metallic brush which also removes dross. A second coating of tin is then applied and the surface brushed with a very fine metallic brush which removes the last traces of dross and polishes the coating.
