Shaping by pressure. - Articles of compressed wood, for example buttons or electrical fittings, are made by compressing wood in a moist state, for example wooden discs 6, in a mould 1 by means of a plunger 2, and then forcing the disc into a holder 7 in which it remains whilst being dried and subjected to other treatment such as hardening and impregnation. A number of holders 7 are used mounted in a rotating member 4. Hot moist air or superheated steam may be used for hardening, and the wood finally dried with hot air. Steaming and dyeing, with or without pressure, may take place beforehand.
