Abstract
194,053. Gerrie, H. R. Jan. 6, 1922. Mounting reserve tyres and wheels on vehicles. -A spare tyre and wheel carrier comprises a swinging carrier-bar 20, 21, Fig. 2, normally lying across the back of the car and adapted to be released and swung out into alignment with the car, as shown, the carrier-bar being simultaneously and automatically lowered. The bar 20, 21 is pivoted at one end by means of an outwardly-inclined pin 16 to a bracket 12 on the car frame 11, and is held in the normal folded position by the engagement of a slotted member 23 with a stud or post on a second bracket on the frame 11, a wing-nut on the stud or post being screwed into a recess in the member 23 to lock the parts together. The carrier is further supported in the folded position by the engagement of a tongue 26, Figs. 2 and 6, thereon with an intermediate bracket 28 having an inclined surface 29, up which the slotted end of the tongue 26 rides into engagement with a stud 30, a wing- nut 31 being then screwed down into a recess 33. A spring 35 to assist the backward movement of the carrier is connected to an arm projecting from the carrier bar 20 adjacent to the pivot 16, and normally lies substantially parallel with the bracket 12. The carrier may comprise a ring 19, and means such as 37 &c. for holding a tyre &c. on each face.
