Abstract

193,878. Shawcross, G. N. Dec. 22, 1921. Chains. - In the manufacture of chain links, an ingot of metal is placed upon a shearing plate 3 and a punch 4 is operated to punch out a blank having the external contour of the link and which falls on to a shearing-block 7. A second punch 8 accommodated within the punch 4 then operates to form the aperture of the link, and the link is then transferred to a finishing-die wherein the desired cross-sectional shape is imparted to the metal, and, if desired, a gedge or part of reduced thickness is formed to facilitate passing the link on to a hook. The links so made are connected together by welded links to form chains or threelink couplings.
