193,498. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., and Ricks, F. Nov. 24, 1921. Softening. - Re.- lates to apparatus of the type described in Specifications 166,924 and 178,939 for softening thermoplastic shoe - end stiffeners such as are described in Specification 18174/13, [Class 17 (ii), Boots and shoes, Construction of]; and consists in a multiple de c k apparatus wherein (a) heating medium passes from a treating chamber of one deck to a treating chamber of a higher deck to act on the work therein along with other medium passed to this latter chamber, (b) a sheltered space is provided for the toe of the last on which is the upper under treatment, and (c) the passage for heating medium from a single heat source is baffled to distribute the medium to different decks. As shown, Bunsen flames from a gas pipe 1 heat a two deck apparatus having shelves 27 for supporting rows of lasts. A baffle 9 subdivides the rising hot gases into two parts, that passing to the lower deck afterwards passing between partitions 10, 23 to the upper deck. Partitions 25, 26 shelter the toes of the lasts from the heat; the upper, stiffener and lining resting on gauze 12. In a modification, separate gas burners are provided for each deck.
