Moulds.-A porous plate or diaphragm for use in a surface combustion heating appliance using a combustible gas, is made from a graded, granular refractory material mixed with powder or siftings of refractory material and converted into a plastic mass by the addition of diluted sodium silicate, the plastic mass being moulded, in a metal mould lined with wire gauze and heated, preferably while still in the mould, until it becomes a rigid porous mass. The plate may have a corrugated or irregular front surface and may be reinforced by means of a metal, refractory, or other supporting structure.
